Excel, a most under used application. Tips that you can use, the series
Ah, MS Excel. I remember when it first came out … on the Mac BTW. Spreadsheets are pretty boring, some say, but we seem to use them a lot in our daily business life. The thing is about Excel is that is it such a powerful tool, that a lot great cool (and easy) features get missed.
How many of you only use Excel for a a chart now and then and look at some data? Maybe make a formula? Yeah, thought so. In fact, when I asked my fellow PYW contributors about a couple of the things I’m going to tell you about they said “Huh? Really?!?! You can do that?!?!”
So here are the tips I’m going to talk about over three posts:
- Sorting. Might sound boring, but I think most people don’t know how easy it is to do complex, multi-column sorts
- Auto-filter. OMG, this is the coolest feature, and frankly I don’t think it gets nearly enough credit or use
- Pivot tables. Okay this is going to be a tough one to explain. I have to scan the help file now and then using them, and I’ve been using them for a couple years now! Undaunted I’m going to try to take the pain out of them and at least get you playing with them.
