Need a free ISO burner?

by Tris Hussey on May 30th, 2007

Sometimes, okay often, I download ISO files I need to burn onto CD or DVD. Generally these are Linux builds that I’m trying out, but you can also backup your computer and save that as an ISO. An ISO, btw, is a disk image file. It’s a compact version that is expanded onto a disk (hard disk, CD, or DVD). Only problem is that Windows doesn’t come with said ISO burner. Yeah you are often saddled with software bundled with your computer that will do this. Ha, but if you moved to Vista, well most of those apps broke. Nice, huh? From GHacks comes ImgBurn which I have downloaded and installed, but not tested as yet:

If you are looking for a versatile CD and DVD burning software that can be freely downloaded and that is supporting most known image formats you should take a closer look at ImgBurn. The program can either read a disc to an image file, build an image from files and folders or burn an image file from your hard drive to a new blank media.

ImgBurn does have a nice simple interface. Maybe I’ll have to download another Linux build to try and see how the burn process goes.

Tried out that ImgBurn and its aced everything I have hit it with, no coasters yet. Very dependable Vista compatible Burner.

    Running Vista Ultimate with a LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S PS09 (does dvdr/rw R-DL and DVD +rw DL) using TDK DVD-R 16x. Good find , thanks.

Tried this out too; excellent ISO burner; strongly recommended for Vista.
